Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Andreas, sorry but that's not what I'm asking. I want to know what happens to Graeme/Mike's car with the 94 Ah cells.

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Mike, sorry to keep hammering this point, but have you tried it? If I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, then I apologise. You see, I have a sneaking feeling that the light is triggered by the Coulomb counting downwards, but the actual power reduction and final shutdown happens on lowest cell Vo...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Thanks for that extra data, Mike. It's not half as bad as I'd feared from your earlier comment.

Do you have a handle on how far it'll actually drive until power gets reduced? (i.e., not just lighting the turtle, but actually acting like one.)

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Ohhhh, I didn't realise the new cells weren't the same chemistry. In that case, I dare say hacking the current sensor won't be enough—it would compensate for the Coulomb counting downward that I assume is happening, but not of course for the trigger at critical low cell Voltage. Not sure from your d...

and the cells are topped up to about 4,105v(about 90-95% real SOC).
Are you saying that the OBC targets 4.105 x 88 instead of 4.100 x 88?
I believe 0.005 V is the limit of accuracy (at least as broadcast in the PIDs).

Mike, to be clear, I'm interested in finding out what the re-celled car is doing, so we can make a guess at how the BMS is reacting to a higher capacity pack and then how best to hack around the problem. I hope we're all well aware of how a normal car behaves.

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I think that the car is doing coulomb counting and after 49Ah just stops the charge. You mean Coulomb counting upwards ? Anything's possible, but that would be weird. Charging is all about firing a constant current into the cells until the pack Voltage reaches 360.8 V, then finishing off with a con...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

It'll be the top half, surely? You're still charging the cells up to 4.1 V and then Coulomb counting the discharge down. Right? But I still don't understand what you're actually seeing, Graeme—is it that the car slows and stops after using 49 Ah? Or is it just that the GOM is pegged at 130 km, but y...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Yeah, on the one hand, replacing it appears to give you little gain. But on the other hand, the bad cell is probably going to continue to degrade much more quickly than the others. The SoC and SoH estimates are based on the Voc of the lowest cell (modulo some fiddle factors). So before too long, you...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Sorry, I'm a moron: I misread the thing on a tiny phone screen, before my second coffee.

Know that the difference in actual charge between a Voc of 3.1V and 2.75V is … well, I believe the technical term is "not a lot."

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I'd be also looking at the cell Voltages at low SoC (at, say, two blobs). If possible, monitor cell Voltages under load, too.

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Do you mean that, after the two resets and a DBCAM, the SoH estimate reads 49 Ah? I think that's to be expected. The question really is: How far can you drive before seeing the turtle?

It won't surprise you to hear that you have a bad cell (possibly more than one).

Thanks. I wouldn't want to block the air moving between the cells (especially when the aircon fires up during DC charging)

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Excellent news. Two questions:
- What kind of jury-rigging?
- Do the posts line up with the original cells, or did you need to fabricate new busbars?

Re: Nuggetgalore's iMiEV charger failure

So the trouble with your OBC started while you had the old battery? Have we yet found a car with a fresh 12V aux battery where the fuse&caps have released the magic smoke?

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Max voltage 4.2, and the imiev charges to just under 4.1 The lev50's out of the imiev are 4.2V fully charged as well but mitsubishi stop at 4.1V for longer life. Which makes sense because there is basically no extra capacity in the last 0.1V anyway. In typical NMC cells, the top 0.1 V is very rough...

Nice. Same terminal style as the LEV series, or is it solder as with the cells you were looking at before?

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Ohhh, so not the SDI 94 Ah cell? I'm going to hazard a guess that the BMS will track down to zero blobs for the top 50 or 60 Ah, but the car will continue to drive until the worst cell reaches a critical Voltage, lighting Mister Turtle. GOM might be similarly weird.
