Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
I can confirm the reduction unit is splash lubricated, I found an old photo of when I first split the motor, gearbox and charger, not the best photo but you get an idea of orientation. Best of luck with the super beetle Ctwidle.

Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
Looks awesome mate! Hope to see it at a meeting, or at the very least Electrikhana 2021! Thanks Chris, I'd love to get it up there for electikhana. Hopefully it's all finished by then. Nice, liquid cooled beetle  I assume there was no neat way of using the original beetle fill port for the...

Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
Spent a bit more time on the beetle this weekend, wired in the 240v charge inlet and interlock to prevent driveway, and plumbed in a small radiator to keep the whole lot cool. Just have to secure some of the wiring and i'm all finished in there.

Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
It has been far too long since I've updated this thread, I got the beetle moving with battery power for first time last weekend :D . There's still so much to do, tidy up and secure heaps of wiring , fit an interior and many other bits and pieces. Its running a simpbms which communicates to volt gen1...

Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
So what are you using to couple the Leaf motor to the VW transaxle? I have a Sterling ( in Australia, it's the Eureka) that i'm going to convert over to electric. Hi Klemmy, I've just seen your post haven't been online for a while. I wish I had photos of it, I basically had the input of the Nissan ...

Fitted the headliner and windows, which was a job I wouldn't wish upo...

FS: 16 X AVASS 460ah cells SOLD
For Sale 16x 460ah AVASS cells and storage cabinet. These cells haven't been used since I bought them, so I'd like to sell them to someone who'll put them to good use. I'm after $2000 to recover the cost of the cabinet as well. All cells read between 3.23 and 3.25v. I'm located in Eaton WA but can a...

Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
I'll have a look at what's left of the leaf gear reduction when I get a chance. It shouldn't be any different to leaving the Kombi in 4th, there is no neutral so it's in gear all the time.

Re: Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
Did you ever consider doing away with the VW gearbox and transaxle as well? I'm planning on converting my '74 Kombi after the body is restored to its former glory or maybe better than when it left the factory. I'm tossing up doing the conventional 3 phase motor adapted to the existing gearbox, or r...

Smokinjoe's Beetle conversion
Hi guys, Here's my 1970 Beetle I've been restoring for the last couple of years. In the last few months I've finished the panel and paint and now I'm starting on the fun stuff :) Mounted on the original transaxle is a Nissan leaf motor and inverter which will likely be controlled by an openinverter ...
