Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Glad there is progress with this project. Funny I do not get the new post notification for this thread anymore, still get it for other threads though. The poor threads are a bit of a concern, could it be that the holes are not tapped deep enough and when tightening it bottoms out before securing the...

Re: i-MiEV Range *no discussion*

Pretty sure this would be the original battery - not used much - picked it up with 16,500 km and now only just over 18,000km (and probably rarely on fast-charge) - airport and demo life..... The accessories I worked on were the Sat-Nav and radio for the vehicle (they were good at the time!) as well...

Re: i-MiEV Range *no discussion*

Managed to get an original Mitsubishi demo vehicle (for our organisation) - as follows: 2010 model (VIN 01/10) 18,000kms (picked up at 16,500) Battery Capacity 42.5Ah Condition 85.00 PMC (assuming 50Ah from factory) Cell voltage variation 0.005 to 0.02V I think it has a range of 120km (based on dri...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The current 60 Ah cells are far from convenient, and they don't appear to have an LEV50 equivalent cell. Graeme over in Qld has ordered some of these 93 Ah cells, so that will be interesting to see how it goes. I'd still put some decent insulation between them though, even with the plastic frames p...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The height difference is consistent with the LEV50 pack having terminal studs, versus terminal pads. It checks out. They are heavier than the LEV50 cells, but not mya great deal. Are any of these cells Physically in Australia? I just wonder if a set of 4 (or 8) could be assembled to make sure it re...

Turned out it's just continuous between the case and battery (+).

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Just checked and sure enough, the case of the cells is live :| Sometimes it's consistent with the (+), sometimes it's continuous with the (-). So basically these cells will need to be packed out entirely with polyethylene so they can't touch each other, or the clamps. Bugger. Are you referring to t...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Well only 5 pages in and I can finally say I'm starting work on Roger Groom's car. Sadly, Roger passed away last September, but his wife Pauline is still driving it and is keen to upgrade to the new high energy density cells. Car is delivered on Saturday and I've set myself a month to get it repack...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Happy New Year all round. I'm hoping the first of the cell replacement iMiEVs gets off the *assembly line* this year. Very much interested in how it performs and then decide if I go ahead with mine. Wished I still lived in Perth (although wonder if it is still the best capital city in Oz as it was i...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Chris, Seriously looking forward to hearing how you get on with this project. The battery in my 2010 car is now down to about 80 km range and I will need a rework plan soon. Pity we are so far apart or else I could help. Same here, just today I did a few errands (84 km) and ended up with 6 km on th...

Well now that I've finished the Prelude I can finally move on with fitting the 60 Ah cells to Pauline's iMiEV. Will make it a bit more useful I think. Ah, I was going to ask on the progress of this project. Mine is down to 80km ( less on a cold day), maybe I have to come out west and say hello afte...

"Perhaps not muscle-car enough for the US market."

My guess similar reason for Australia. Add to it the range anxiety ,high price and lack of environmental awareness. Ten years on and a lot has changed.

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

It has been very quiet lately on the iMiEV front.
Just came back from Qld where I hibernate, the cold weather sure reduces the range!
Any new developments in the cell replacement saga?

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I thought that the 2012s that came to Australia were all made before the change to LEV50N and so have LEV50 like the 2010 model. That is an interesting comment. For one reason or another,I assumed (guilty as charged), that the 2012 units have the LEV50N cells. Nevertheless , checking and comparing ...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

There will be about $7500 worth of cells in an iMiEV, and probably another couple of grand in labour putting it all together. It should give about 150 km range though. For 150 km range ten grand would be worthwhile . The next question is I suppose harder to quantify: how long do these cells last, r...

Re: Replacement battery

Hi Toby, unfortunately I can't easily fit the 84 Ah or 100 Ah cell options in the iMiEV case without a major re-work of the enclosure. The 60 Ah cells are still a lot of work, but they would actually fit and with minor hassle from the BMS. I will be placing an order for these NMC cells (60 Ah and 1...
