Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

Yeah compression is a good thing, but you don't need to go overboard. The cells I have are 'constrained' but I wouldn't say they were compressed. Thanks for the replies. I think I will box mine into two rows of 8 without excessive force ,just hold 'em tight. Allows me to start with 24 volts to use ...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

Mate of mine told me to place some type of corrugated plastic spacers between the cells(to allow cooling between the cells) and mount them in a strong tight container. The pictures at the start of this thread show the cells tightly packed but not constrained, any comment on this? What happens when t...

Hi Chris I was one of the lucky ones who picked up the larger capacity batteries in Melbourne, so have sent you a bit extra to help cover the extra freight costs. Cheers Jeff Great. What are you going to get as a BMS? I have the same cells, tossing up on getting a ready made one or buy the bits and...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

A 20 kWh iMiEV is actually quite reasonable considering they were never exactly a highway cruiser... I'd be much more interested in a cheap 20kwh i-miEv than an expensive 47kwh one. We rarely do more than 50km/day. Most of the longer trips we use the ICE for also require more space, comfort and gro...

Thanks Chris! You have done an awesome job and I thank you and others involved for putting yourself out to give these batteries a new life and to help fellow AEVA members. As a thank you to Chris for all his efforts perhaps those receiving the batteries would like to make a "thank you" payment to C...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

The standard advice in the early days of LiFePO₄ was that all cells had to be upright all the time. The reasoning was to do with stratification of the electrolyte. But there is almost no free electrolyte in the cells, and now it seems that the advice is that any orientation other than vent down is ...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

I'm not too keen on your wiring panel at the top of the rack being made out of wood. It looks like at least one line is actually mounted to it through your brass bar. Wood absorbs moisture. I'd replace only that part with acrylic or polycarb or use another iso mount bar. Otherwise very nice 8-) I h...

Re: I-MiEV Main battery cell failure

Is the turtle exclusive to the i-MiEV or carried over from the i? Never had it come on in ours, even when it had obviously gone into a reduced power mode. Is there any official documentation about it from Mitsubishi? I think I looked in the handbook and didn't find anything. The turtle is definitel...

Re: iMiev Recall notice

Has LEV 50 N since I changed the pack in December Didn’t know that the 2012 has LEV 50 N cells. The only reason I believe the 2012 has the "N" cells is because I read articles telling that Yuasa had a lot of complaints with the LEV50s and made improvements that supposedly were used for the 2012 iMi...

Re: iMiev Recall notice

My dad did the roll down the driveway while plugged in trick too. In his case the evse still had power. That is why I think it is a design fault ( omission) to not have an interlock between the "ready condition" and the gear stick (and hand brake?). I recognize that it is mechanically more involved...

Re: iMiev Recall notice

Aha, that explains the mishap. "put drink away, then put it in E released handbrake......" That is one of the very few things I can think of is not foolproof. Not being "ready" should not allow the gear stick to get out of park. Interlock feature that does not allow system shut down if the gear stick...

Does the same thing happen when the plug is plugged in, but the evse has no power attached? Only asking as I power my evse via a timer. Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

The way forward? SiriusTitanateModule.png i.e. Get some white-on-red stickers made with the word "TITANATE". Lithium Titanate cells have many advantages over other lithium-ion cells. Those advantages just don't happen to include one million cycles to 100% DOD, a 45 year calendar life, operation at ...

I went to the presentation last night. It was more about ARVIO's business of manufacturing /supplying storage systems than the supercaps. I think their products are top notch, irrespective of the battery . www.arvio.com.au The question if the Kiolwatt lab SIRIUS Capacitor Module stores the energy in...

Re: Inside an iMiEV's LEV50 cell

Supercapacitors would not be practical for a car - they still offer 1 4 of the energy density of today's Li-ion cells. I'd always thought they could be very helpful as a supplemental store of charge, though. Recoup more from deceleration, feed back into the battery pack more slowly. Or just store a...

There is a company in Europe that has upgraded the Outlander PHEV battery to 19.5kWh, maybe you can get some ideas from him as it uses very similar cells. https://yout...
