Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Bypassing the computer that refuses to accept the battery would be a matter of using an off the shelf component to replace it. You could get to the point you'd essentially done a "conversion" on the imiev with all the parts one might use for an ICE conversion except the drive unit. Would it be worth...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I've invested more in "money pit" cars that were only going to cost more money when I was younger (and dumber?). With any luck the savings in fuel pay for the batteries as the prices come down. I've seen figures around the $6K mark for Mitsubishi battery replacements on the internet though, so I'm n...

Why would you have no insurance? Isn't this really the same as replacing any other part of a car?

Re: Brighsun 220Ah cells

Thanks for the detailed advice. I might have to contact some local engineering and metal fabrication outfits, and see what they can do. I was actually thinking of fully flexible cables (as below), but a semi flexible strip sounds more robust, and better performance. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/v0...

Re: Brighsun 220Ah cells

Aluminium links are a bad idea. What would you suggest as optimal? Copper strip? Brass? Steel? Nickel? Are any of these non reactive in contact with the terminals? Or is it going to be necessary to use jointing compound regardless? As I understand it copper is easy to work with but expensive. The t...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I think it's similar - an ECU gets replaced wholesale. Although the cost of that is from my knowledge under $1000, and in cars I've dealt with you can swap it out by just unplugging it and plugging a new one in. I think there are a lot more ICs and less discrete components in an ice ECU, so repairab...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I guess I was coming more from a practical than legal standpoint. I honestly would have assumed the local auto electrician might only give me a bemused look if I took it to him., although that is uncharitable of me. I should probably contact one to ask them if do work on EVs in case I need to call o...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

All that might be true, but I'm not sure most people have an accessible alternative. Maybe I'm underestimating the auto electricians in the area and their high voltage work capabilities? I don't blame Mitsubishi for not having a local staff person qualified in this, nor do I blame the local staff fo...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Good to hear it's back on the road! Yes, I've been a bit miffed by the possibility of a $4000 repair bill, but I'll definitely want to get it back on the road. Thinking of my neighbours car troubles puts it in perspective. He bought a low kilometre vehicle that seemed to be all in good conditions, m...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I think perhaps it's two different wordings for the same part - there are three components involved as far as I know. I'm thinking: Battery Management system (BMS) = Battery ECU Charger/DC-DC converter = DC Converter EV-ECU = motor controller I got an update from the dealer today: 1 month ETA on the...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I've read elsewhere the "charger/DC-DC" is not VIN locked, but that the EV-ECU is. But is the battery ECU another unit again?

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I'm definitely interested in bumping the capacity of our imiev up slightly when the batteries need replacement. Due to the distance we are from town and living up a mountain we don't have a lot of spare range for our daily commute. An extra 25% capacity would alleviate our "go easy on the heater" da...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

Having had mine assessed by the dealer, $395 in fees for diagnostics and the next step is replacing the EV-ECU ($1400) (and if that doesn't sort it the charger unit is next at $4K+). They are going to do a "dummy order" to get info on the part location and ETA just so I have an idea how long I'm off...

Re: AVASS Battery order details

I wasn't actually intending on operating it off grid, I'd probably go for the Victron or Selectronic options for that. However I was thinking thinking in theory if you are DC (solar) charging the batteries, and the BMS is telling it there is plenty of energy it would continue to support loads to net...

Re: AVASS Battery order details

I had a look at some of the Goodwe SBP 5000 spec sheets. It does have a lot of configurations listed as unsupported (generator on AC side, connecting backup side to grid etc). I'm wondering if it can DC couple to solar panels. The closest I can see in the user manual is "one battery bank cannot be c...

Is yours completely out of action? Sounds like buying a new car while waiting might have actually been a sensible idea.
Given your hindsight, that it is going to take more than a few months to sort out, I'll have to consider something like that. Should have kept the paddock basher registered!

Re: AVASS Battery order details

I wasn't thinking so much of the amount of generation (PV panels) as the charger current capability. Some inverters seem to handle a larger amount of solar panels proportional to their charger current capability. If ones inverter only has a charge capability of 50A it would take about 10 hours to fi...

Re: AVASS Battery order details

I can absolutely respect a position based on ROI. I'm interested in more economical solutions, just to see what is possible. I'm also a bit motivated to put some extra money into it as a bit of an experiment, to see how close we can get to operating grid independent or off grid. I suppose I could ge...

Re: AVASS Battery order details

I haven't seen any other promising options for a BMS besides Batrium. The Batrium gear seems quite comprehensive. As far as inverters there are a few options. In battery only inverters the Selectronic SP Pro 48V units would work, and there are the Victron Quattro units. These are fairly pricey. In h...

Re: My home battery storage system

The Goodwe 3600SBP does look like a great fit. I suppose if you wanted to add solar you could still DC couple to the pack with an solar charge controller. I'm not sure I'd DC coupling to a device that isn't expecting that might throw it's state if charge measurements out of whack. Depending on what ...

We have an existing Grid tie hybrid inverter with solar and storage, and I'm thinking along the lines of adding another hybrid inverter and potentially more solar. One of the things I noticed was that the 23kwh packs are going to potentially be difficult to completely charge in the sunlight hours - ...
