Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

Unfortunately no. The 15 amp clipper creek goes into fault mode and volt doesn’t charge. But if the RCD in the meter box does not trip, then the clipper creek EVSE can be turned off and disconnected and you have the chance to try again. Having to try a couple of times is much better than being lock...

Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

Lol if you put another rcd in you’ll have 3 rcds in series. The clipper creek 15 amp showed up with charge fault sometimes with my volt, but would not trip the main RCD. The voltec GM/Holden 10A EVSE is made by clipper creek. So, perhaps the clipper creek 15 amp EVSE has a more sensitive, faster RC...

Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

Completely agree with you. Major annoyance and inconvenience, especially for next user. Hence glad I got rid of revolting volt. I’m not an electrician But The issue may be having 2 rcds in series... I don't doubt your experience, but I find it hard to see how the absence of one RCD could prevent an...

Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

I have a solution. Buy the smallest wallbox unit you can find...And wire is up for luggable use...My layperson’s Reason being that wallboxes don’t have rcds. Thanks but I am not sure how that would help when the tripping RCD is upstream of the power point. With or without an RCD in the EVSE, the ma...

Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

Any solution yet? ... I am wondering if it is worth getting a portable in-line RCD cord? My thought is to have that trip where it affects only the car and I can readily reset it to have another go at starting charging. With luck it might be slightly more sensitive than others so it goes first? The ...

Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

Hi Peter, Probably not much help to you, but I use a Volt EVSE to charge my Mitsubishi Outlander when I am out. My experience has been that it will only trip out if used on 10A sockets. I use it reasonably regularly on a 15A socket and from memory it has never tripped out on one of those. Mine will...

Re: A closer look at the volt RCD tripping issue

Any solution yet? I have had a Volt since Jan 2018. Most of the time it charges OK but it trips RCDs just often enough to be really annoying. It did it at a public charging location where the meter box was locked so I could not reset it. Fortunately I could use a second outlet that must have been on...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

The DC/DC converter and the AC charger is one unit in the I-Miev... That explains a high cost. Considering that it is a specialist part that the manufacturer has had to keep a stock of, $4000 does not seem so disproportionate to other moderately complex car parts sourced from original manufacturers...

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

I think the most common thing among electric cars is to charge the 12V via a DC-DC converter from the traction battery. Some do that all the time. Others, only while driving. A weak 12V battery can cause all sorts of strange problems in various models. Some conversions don't have a DC-DC converter b...

Re: The full Hyundai Ioniq range headed down under

The Hyundai guy I talked to at the ACT's EV policy launch at few days ago said (with a bunch of caveats) 'about $43,000'. The Ionique was a nice looking car. Very similar overall size and shape to the Holden Volt. I could live with one.

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

$14,000 is probably about the going price for an iMiEV these days.
For a more anonymous car, there are some Holden Volts going at cheap prices these days and the Hyundai Ionique looks pretty good for a new EV.

Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

If our iMiEV required a $4000 repair, I'd be a bit annoyed but I would recognise that spending $4000 would get me back to having a well-put-together EV with no other known problem. That is not an outcome I could get for this price any other way. BTW "If only the 12V battery could be topped up, as re...

What about cells with threaded terminals and a copper plate with just an array of holes? [Lots of screws to do up and retighten and potential to come loose, I guess]

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

At the moment, the prismatic cells are cooled by just having air blown past, I think, air-conditioner chilled air if on a fast charger. It seems to me that the hexagonal array would be more porous to air flow than single solid rectangular blocks and might be better cooled without any special effort....

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

It seems to me that a key question is, What would the unmodified BMS do if it suddenly finds the battery capacity had increased? I could imagine that it might simply observe the voltage rise is slower and more than 16kWh have gone in but keep going with charging and quickly learn and recalibrate on ...

Re: 10 Amp charging

I would use 15A cable for anything that pulls 10A continuously for an extended time. It's easy to remember: 15A rated cable has conductors that are 1.5mm2 cross-sectional area of copper and 10A rated cable is 1.0mm2. Look for the embossed 1.5mm2 on the side of the insulation. Some extension cords cl...

Has anybody updated the satnav maps?
I phoned Holden and they didn't seem to have any update. They suggested that the Volt might be like the Cruze and that some car audio place might be able to do something clever. Has anyone tried?

Re: Driving an EV in slow moving traffic?

No problem at all having fine control while going slowly, both in my converted car and commercial cars, iMiEV and Volt. The converted car has a Kelly controller that can plug into a PC to use an application to set the motor controller parameters, including various aspects of throttle response.

Nice one Peter - was the Volt local or from interstate?
I took an early morning bus from Canberra to Sydney, did the familiarising, test drive, negotiating and paying through the middle of the day, then drove home to Canberra in the evening.

Just bought a second-hand Volt

Hi, I just bought a second-hand MY13 Holden Volt. It is doing very nicely. It drives smoothly like an EV. I have only a couple of times noticed a very brief hesitation and wonder if that is one of the clutches in the Voltec arrangement doing its thing. Our petrol car is leaving home with our daughte...

Re: Dealer can tell you kWhs in iMiEV

I now have two data points! Last week we had the airbag recall done and I asked to be told the battery capacity result as well. Previously it was 12.9kWh. Now 12.7kWh. The little change is reassuring because I had the feeling the range remaining guess-o-meter has been telling me lower numbers lately...
