Re: i-MiEV not charging, high voltage warning light and battery

The DC/DC converter and the AC charger is one unit in the I-Miev... That explains a high cost. Considering that it is a specialist part that the manufacturer has had to keep a stock of, $4000 does not seem so disproportionate to other moderately complex car parts sourced from original manufacturers...

@Supercaps reminds me of a person who poses a complicated riddle with a stupid know-it-all look on their face and the only reason they know the answer is that they were told.
If it's so amazing -and true - just spit it out.

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

You're right. I missed the fuse in the middle of the pack.
I have mine so the main traction fuse and aux fuses come off the pack - not fuses in series. That's just a preference though. Good that the charger has O/P relays. All good.

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

Looks OK but 2 comments.
1. It needs a fuse to the inverter.
2. If you are thinking of using a contractor on the charger DC side ensure the charger can handle being re-connected without damage. Some chargers can not connect without pre-charge.

So glad it went well. When you say you "couldn't maintain more than 82 km/h" was that because you were keeping to a set power consumption?

That doesn't explain the sudden reading of 54 Volts (or thereabouts) when the short was removed.

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

I totally missed that this was a riddle/challenge. If there is no DC/DC and it REALLY is super caps then it follows that it is switching series/parallel modes to maintain voltage. The price still doesn't pass the reasonableness test.

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

The super cap module internal resistance of 6mOhms explains the jump to match the power supply voltage IMO. So what are the questions that this raises? No questions - just some annoying facts. A 6 mOhm internal resistance would result in a jump of 0.0462 volts @7.7 Amps. The jump is more easily exp...

Very interesting. They appear to have the buck/boost converter built in which makes it a really good alternative to batteries for load shifting with the great cycle life.

Re: 18v Power tool batteries ?

The power tool battery packs actually contain a number of lipo cells in series. These cells are not rated to put out high current and will sag (voltage drop) if asked to do so. They will also not last long. EV battery packs using these smaller cells usually place many of them in parallel - then then...

Re: Driving an EV in slow moving traffic?

Mine does not have creep mode and I find it no concern at all. With Regen braking it's pretty much single pedal with just moving to the brake pedal to hold still. On hills I two foot it. I don't miss creep mode and find driving normal autos a bit annoying now.

Thanks for the offer Terry but I think the effort getting them to 60v would be a bit too much. I have recently bought a charger rated to 5 Amps and dialled down to 3 as a replacement to try and I think it'll be massively more reliable. I may just replace them as they fail and stop repairing the old ...

I've edited my previous post - yes it's wrong. It look like a capacitor so may be more prone to RF Interference or EMI than if it was correctly placed.
Can you elaborate on "doesn't discharge properly"?.

My expectation would be one bar lost. Two if it has been treated badly. If you google, somewhere there is a description of how much capacity each of these bars represents - it's not linear. Ahh what the heck - I googled it. The first lot of hot links tells the story. One bar lost is 15% lost, 2 bars...

Re: 2nd Hand LEAF

The Leaf comes with a handy battery condition indicator right there on the dash. The large inner scale is the projected range for "today", while the outer scale is the overall battery pack condition.
You can quickly assess when the condition is before even driving the car.

Johny's Electric Vogue

I seem to only post here with problems but that's just because the Vogue has now done over 35,000km and never stranded me - or missed a day of travel. The chargers are pretty much my only ongoing issue. I had a spectacular charger failure a couple of months ago. The Vogue has 12 of 59V 3A chargers -...
