Re: VIC to introduce EV and PHEV road tax
My partner got hers almost straight away (well over a month ago), but still haven't got mine. Even called last week. 'Cheque was in the mail' was the pat response .. after over 20 min on hold then trite lines about non-applicable explanations for late payments AFTER I explained the details. NOT HAPP...

Re: Ford Mustang Mach-E
If it's any help - did a test drive and report on the 'poverty pack' Mach-e for TheDriven late last year. In summary - range is fine in the base model and the features specs are the same in all of them, so why spend the dollars on the higher priced one?? Easy to drive and to all the world felt like ...

Service costs comparisons
Hi there Svetlana - am currently putting together a comparison article for TheDriven re comparing EV service costs ... once my brain clears from over a week of long-distance EV driving, EV test drives plus Everything Electric in the middle. Give me a week or two and I'll post here when it's up. Chee...
Re: BYD T3
eDeliver 7 might be your cup of tea then? Price better than the others (for now). Victory van may be the closest to your criteria for price, but range not as good as the eDeliver 7. BTW: I wrote a first impressions article on the 7 for TheDriven - is up today: https://thedriven.io/2024/02/08/first-d...

Re: That VicRoads EV Refund
Hi there - received my letter a couple of weeks ago. Filled it out and and posted it as soon as it arrived. (...including the waiver... ) Interest rates are 4%, 6.9% and 6.3%. Better than the bank in all that time! Expecting it the end of this month as the interest payment is up to March 1 only. (De...
Re: BYD T3
There's a couple coming that may be of interest (suspect BYD have 'moved on' from the T3 and won't be interested in doing them again). - LDV eDeliver (slightly bigger and more expensive than a T3) - Victory EC2 van (equivalent to T3 and likely similar price) Victory will be at Everything Electric, e...

Re: Can't access EV Fact Sheets
Good to hear it's fixed! Have just uploaded a flurry of new sheets. The start of the year is always busy for EV announcements and arrivals. The following sheets are now up: - LDV eDeliver 7 - Hyundai Kona 2024 (i.e. the all-new, 2024 model) - Hyundai Kona 2019-23 (Moved to second-hand template and n...

Re: Anyone confirm the Tesla UMC only requires a Type A RCD
Hi Rod - it's covered on page 4 of the Aust/NZ installation manual for the Gen 3 Wall Connector Manual. To quote from that manual:
Residual Current Detection (RCD): Integrated (Type A + DC 6 mA)

Re: Anyone confirm the Tesla UMC only requires a Type A RCD
Hi there Rod - having tested the Tesla Mode 3 EVSE many times with a dedicated EVSE tester (we have a Tesla EVSE as one of the five in the EVSE training room, as well as both the Fluke and Metrel EVSE testers): it does have DC detection to 6mA built in. The key issue is that in NZ you must fit a Typ...

Hi there - just as an FYI: my Fact Sheets on the AEVA website do cover the 2024 Ioniq 5 (and 6). WLTP and US EPA driving range numbers now included for the (numerous!) 2024 versions of both.

Re: 32A plug - am I just weak or not very bright
Usual issue with screw ring not working is not pushing the plug in fully. The round pins are quite a snug fit. (Currently using a similar 32A single phase set up. Still catches me ocassionally. Fyi: am swapping to a Wallbox Pro next week. Will do a write up on it for TheDriven... when I work out how...

PP and CP are 1.5mm² by the standard. The active, N and E are likely 6mm².

Re: EV newbie confused with charger costs
Forgot to add that yes, sometimes the comments to some articles on TheDriven are pretty silly - but you can just not bother with reading them. I do that for some of the new energy/green websites I visit. Most of the replies add useful nuances though. (Although am occasionally glad of the silly ones:...

Re: EV newbie confused with charger costs
Hi there - you've got plenty of room in that SB. Removing the redundant AC 3 phase breaker gives you space. Swapping the upper row to circuit breaker/safety switch combos will even give you two more slots! The 40A main switch is a problem - but an 11kW 3 phase charger with solar and mains sensing ca...

Hi there - just remembered I wrote an article on a similar question to yours late last year for TheDriven - see:

Hope that helps?

Hi there - funnily enough, I have written several articles on that very topic! First was in Renew magazine in around 2018 from memory, latest were for TheDriven in the last couple of weeks. (Am also BTW currently teaching a new course to electricians on EVSE installing). Articles: https://thedriven....

Re: Extension cords
Hi there - found some years ago that 15A leads at hardware stores were reduced from 2.5mm2 to 1.5mm2. Am guessing someone, somewhere, realised according to the standard that 1.5 used out in the open would radiate heat enough to keep it under the max temperature ... provided it didn't carry a continu...

iMiEV for sale: Melbourne
2010 iMiEV for sale. Silver, 42,000km. Reliable 70km max range still. In excellent condition inside, paint is good but has the usual collection of parking dings for it's age from living in the inner city before I bought it. Has been a useful (and fun :-) ) spare car, but I don't use it enough to jus...

Re: iMiEV charging, J1772 testing
Correct - AVC2 board allows Mode 3 chargers to connect, but it doesn't control the car end. Depends on what you want it to to. If you want to charge at public AC chargers - it does the job. However the 2010 iMiEVs can't be limited to less than (or draw more than) the 12.5A they are set to. Mine has ...

Re: iMiEV charging, J1772 testing
Yep, thought of that in the middle of the night and was logging back on now to add that point .... to find someone had already noticed my forgetfulness! It's a standard socket - you can either buy a new socket and swipe the pin out of it or just swap the entire socket. Either way, you then add the A...

Re: iMiEV charging, J1772 testing
Hi there - I own a 2010 iMiEV with Mode 1 charging (i.e. no 'brick'). It was fitted with the different loom for the Victorian EV trial and works fine with public AC EVSEs. An alternative is to fit the AVC2 board (http://modularevpower.com/Active_Vehicle_Side_Control_development.htm) I used them for ...
