Re: seeking advise - EV batteries oriented towards performance

The 30C/60C cells are 160 Wh/kg Hey now you're talkin  Yeah, but as Francisco mentioned the cycle life suffers with these cells. The layer of active material is so thin it's prone to structural failures, limiting the amount of charge which can be stored in the matrix. Cooling will definite...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

Frustratingly, the flywheel sits 10 mm too proud of the plate face! How on Earth did I manage this? I had the flywheel thickness correct but must have forgotten to subtract the offset at the hub mounts or something... 20190519_105303.jpg 20190519_104457.jpg In any case the motor can be mounted 10 mm...

Re: seeking advise - EV batteries oriented towards performance

@jonescg Because I am not good at math, how do your packs compare price wise and density wise to the ElMofo packs? Those things look pretty amamzing but also pretty expensive. Yours look pretty damn nice too. https://www.elmofo.com.au/lithium-batteries.html Pricewise, my packs are a bit cheaper tha...

jonescg from some other forum wrote: Technically they are a 2C continuous, 5C peak
Yep that's crazy power.

:?:
Two different cells in operation ;)

The 30C/60C cells are 160 Wh/kg

The 2C/5C cells are 208 Wh/kg

Probably best place to see what I've built is on this thread over at Endless-Sphere: https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewt ... 0#p1398812
Lots before and after, but it's a good place to start.

Re: What is happening with Renault EVs in Australia?

Yeah it's pretty disappointing the radio silence. They were struggling to get them in at one point, so I reckon they have put a self-imposed stop-sale on them. It's possibly been too effective. I'm borrowing a Demo Zoe to drive to Esperance in a couple of weeks. Shirwin had no problem letting me tak...

Re: seeking advise - EV batteries oriented towards performance

What's your budget? I build high powered LiPo battery packs which deliver crazy power, and have respectable energy density (160 Wh/kg) but as a built pack are about $1250/kWh. So definitely not cheap, but they will be fairly light and even the most powerful inverters and motors would struggle to kee...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

I ended up buying Rob Dean's AVASS battery for my home storage needs, using the proceeds from the sale of my PowerCabinet. Since it will be a while before I am ready to install it, I put them all in parallel and started charging at about 18 amps and 3.7 volts. I would check the voltage periodically ...

Re: Bought a cheap BMS ... but what have I been given?

These cheap BMS units also tend to draw power from the first two cells, so if left for a while they can unbalance the pack in short order.

G'day Chris, did you get those links I sent you about machinists? Sent to your gmail address. Also, you might want to invest in an adjustable reamer if you want accurate holes. Cheers, Geoff Thanks Geoff, yes I did get them. Ended up going back to Mike McCarthy since he had time to get onto it. He'...

Re: Bought a cheap BMS ... but what have I been given?

Tim, the black wire on the small connector will probably be in common with the last positive of the large connector. Take a mulitmeter set to conductivity and test the last pin with the first pin to see if they are joined at the PCB. The most critical point is to start wiring from battery negative a...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

Mark Winstanley kindly turned up some transfer pins which fit neatly inside the blind holes of the gearbox. Critically the dowel pins were nice and accurate, while the central 19 mm shaft seemed as central as I could get it. Transfer dowel punch.jpg I put lots of marker pen on the recieving face to ...

Costs of batteries

Today I was looking at battery chemistry options and thrashing around why certain ones are chosen over others. I've always thought LFP made perfect sense for home / grid scale storage considering its long cycle life, high point of thermal runaway and minimal fire when it does run away. So I was wond...

Yeah avoid that digital cesspit if you can. http://www.brighsunauto.com/Ch/ProductView.asp?ID=4 I think 200 A discharge won't be a problem at all. They are technically good down to 2 V but I think 2.5 V is effectively empty. There is nothing to be gained by charting to 3.65 V, indeed the difference ...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

The 19 mm hole made for a slightly sloppy fit (0.1 mm radius too large) but unfortunately 18.8 mm drills are not common. Why wouldn't you get it profile (laser or water-jet) cut? The centre-punched point is my only datum, so all points are relative to this. I could possibly take it to a machinist w...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

The 19 mm hole made for a slightly sloppy fit (0.1 mm radius too large) but unfortunately 18.8 mm drills are not common. So the gearbox input shaft had a little bit of tape put around it until it was nice and uniform, and the plate didn't budge in any direction. 20190430_194451.jpg Time to get the t...
