Inside a Model 3 battery

Some of us have been waiting a long time to get a tid-bit of information about how Tesla has put their Model 3 battery packs together. Not because they are necessarily good (although, that they are) but because its always something rather unique. And that it is  Model 3 battery5.JPG Model 3 b...

Re: Powering the home from spare EV charge?

If you plan on building an EV, you can plan your home storage battery as well. Yes, the two batteries can (and probably should) differ - EV batteries are generally rated to high power discharge, while home storage cells are less powerful (and therefore cheaper). If the battery of the vehicle is betw...

All good - since found a supplier of gas/liquid heat exchangers which are easily incorporated into the car's AC.

Now this looks interesting. Assuming your vehicle doesn't have an AC system already, I wonder if this would be a practical option?

Re: The Energy Retailers Strike Back. Will Cheap Off Peak Rates Kill Battery Storage?

I think the EV plan is more about setting a system up and tweaking it later. Right now, a general off-peak rate is better value than the EV rate, but the $200 incentive makes it worth considering. I would think that midday will soon become the cheapest (and most stable) time to charge an EV. Workpla...

Re: The Energy Retailers Strike Back. Will Cheap Off Peak Rates Kill Battery Storage?

Hi Patrick, I think the net result is ultimately good for the customer - if cheap rates at specific times of day undermine the economics of battery storage, then the customer saves money by charging their EV / doing their laundry / setting the hot water system etc accordingly and not buying the batt...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

So there's a mountain of evidence to suggest the Kilowattlabs product is in fact a lithium titanate battery, and not a capacitor (super or otherwise) and yet you maintain that it's perfectly okay to call it a supercapacitor?

I might hop on my hoverboard* and ride to the shops.

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Yeah, I'm thinking of something like that - basically a copper interconnect between the series connections, but soldering is my best option there. It makes for a less conductive thermal path for axial cooling plates, but it might be good enough.

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

At the moment, the prismatic cells are cooled by just having air blown past, I think, air-conditioner chilled air if on a fast charger. It seems to me that the hexagonal array would be more porous to air flow than single solid rectangular blocks and might be better cooled without any special effort...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I don't know to be honest. I think there is a 're-learning' process involved, and the SOC would surely be a combination of coulomb counting as well as monitoring cell voltages. At least the capacity increase would only be 45% more than the original, so it's not too far off. My bigger concern is the ...

Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I bought about 800 of these three-hexagon cell holders for 18650 cells. More than enough to put some 4-cell and 8-cell battery packs together as replacements for the iMiEV battery packs. 20180407_134158.jpg This layout gives a 23-parallel arrangement, so if you assume a reliable 3 Ah per cell, that'...

Re: Inside an iMiEV's LEV50 cell

I bought about 500 x 18650 cells - Mainly Samsung 30Qs and about 100 Panasonic/Sony 18650GA cells. Quality looks to be okay but I haven't done much testing on them.
They worked out to be about $6 each, and as they were a re-seller there wasn't any price break on bulk orders.

Re: Inside an iMiEV's LEV50 cell

I just received my delivery of 18650 cell holders; not enough for a whole battery, but certainly enough to build a 4-cell and an 8-cell test module. I figure 24 kWh worth of high end cylindrical cells would be quite achievable with an iMiEV battery.

Quick question for the high voltage converters - how do you heat your cabin / demist your windows? I found this kit online, and I doubt I could engineer something better for much less money: http://www.electriccarpartscompany.com/350V-480V-10000-BTU-3000W-br-Double-Element-br-Inline-EV-CoolantWater-...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

Yes I watched it last night and had a think. I have seen LiFePO4 cells go from under 1 volt to 3.4 volts under a constant voltage, current-limited charge regime. So what I saw in this video still doesn't suggest it's anything but an LTO cell. Mind you, if it was an LTO cell, I wouldn't use it again ...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

The cells are at their happiest at 20 degrees C. However as long as their average lifetime temperature and state of charge is as close to 20 degrees as possible, they will live a long life. While they might have a maximum operating temperature of 60 degrees, you would want to minimise the time spent...

Re: Prelude conversion project - some questions

Hmm good point. I guess we should look after our humans before the batteries... I don't think the battery coolant would be getting more than a few degrees over ambient, but as you say the heat exchanger will be pretty good at warming up the refrigerant. I'm wondering if a thermostat can be set up so...
