Re: Odometer tax?

I actually did an interview with ABC Darwin about this issue, and the announcer kept suggesting that EV owners were free-loading, or being subsidised... About 6000 plug-in vehicles in a fleet of over 13 million, and somehow we're responsible for the decline in road revenues! While I suggested most o...

Re: Odometer tax?

A statement on the ABC story can be found here:
http://www.aeva.asn.au/content/evs-and-road-use-charges

basically, we think it's fair that everybody contributes to road maintenance, but we've also paid a small fortune for our EVs already, so come back when EVs make up more than 5% of the fleet.

Re: Odometer tax?

I heard this morning's ABC Radio Perth stand-in presenter announce this saying that "because of the popularity of Electric Vehicles" the government fuel tax revenues were falling. Have EV sales suddenly grown by several orders of magnitude while I was out bush over the past fortnight? I wanted to r...

Perhaps the most disingenuous headline from the ABC? More like, "Breaking the road revenue model" I guess.

Re: Odometer tax?

Some numbers to contemplate - The current fuel excise is paid as a cents per litre on all unleaded and diesel fuel sold in Australia to road going customers (i.e. mine sites don't pay it). The federal government collects about $12 billion a year from the sale of petrol and diesel, and the reason for...

They currently pay higher rego fees based on weight, yes. And on toll roads around the world heavy vehicles pay significantly more than cars and motorcycles.

Dragging up an old thread here. http://www.smh.com.au/comment/stand-by-australia-for-the-electric-car-revolution-20180112-h0hazy.html In light of the current energy minister's article in the Age about EVs (which both surprises and confuses us) discussion has once again re-emerged about an odometer t...

And with the auxiliary battery fixed, it became worthwhile to fix the power steering, again with help from Bladecar. For some reason I found myself looking at radio controlled hobby motors and found some in-runner motors that spin up to 5000 rpm and are good for about 2 kW. I thought to myself mayb...

Re: Pipistrel electric aeroplane - in Perth!

Yeah, they plan on using this craft for flight training and eventually the 4-seater for trips to Rotto. Prop noise was really quite modest. Nobody had a need to cover their ears. The parachute is for the whole aircraft, but at 350 kg I suspect you'd still need to do a fair bit of flapping and steeri...

These might be a good place to start. Parker GVM do a wide range of motors too but they might be a bit too heavy for your application.

Ah I'm just jealous. We're still renting here in the West, but we might consider buying something this year. I need a place for all my projects where I can tinker with them long term.

Re: AC charger with solar edge

What voltage are you aiming for? 48 V I assume? 14 in series and about 60 in parallel? I suspect an inverter-charger or hybrid inverter will do what you want quite nicely. If the inverter doesn't have a battery input then you will need an AC to DC (240 V AC to 48 V DC) charger, and a separate invert...

Quick follow-up - the company will do the oxygen-free crimping for you. So if you are interested in some of these, make sure you order it with a pre-set length of 35/50/70 mm2 cable.

Re: Labelling of Battery Compartment ???

I think the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark / lightning bolt is the best option. A "Danger hazardous voltageges / Hazardous stuff inside" warning really. As there are no acids to vent there's no need for anything like "corrosive" and the like.

The tubes are kind of hard to find. The valve stems are offset making them a little unique.
Tubeless would make for an easier tyre change anyway.
