I was thinking of getting some leaf cells, new from salvaged Nissan Leafs.
2S-2P 7.2V 55Ah each at $85 plus freight, a pallet load would make freight about 800 to brisbane. I don't need a whole pallet. Room for anyone else to jump a ride for their pack. They can come as blocks of 8 ready to mount up. That makes a 120Ah 120V pack with 32 modules (4x8packs) for $3060Us. waiting for more details. 1000+ available

That sounds pretty good.

A 60Ah CALB cell is roughly AU$0.45/Whr
These would be roughly AU$0.25/Whr. I'd be up for that, for sure! I'd want 6x8packs, if they have it.

EDIT: Or 2x24packs, or 50 individual modules, or any other combination that gets me 22-26kWhr.

Wow, they certainly look yummy in the photos.

But surely salvaged cells won't always look as nice as this.

They're in a sealed enclosure in the Leaf. It'd have to be a very hard hit to damage the battery pack. As long as it's not caught up in a flood or fire, they should be in good shape.

so you have shipping sussed out then?

I just had a look at the pics for the individual cells - rewiring them looks to be a bit of a pain

I'm interested in two of the 60v ones

maybe as many as 10 (for the hilux)

no reply as to how much fits on a pallet, I was told by someone it needs to be on surface freight as they aparrently are dangerous goods but they said they had already shipped by air to Oz, no cell tech details yet.

At the bottom of the description they show pictures of the different sized packs of modules which looks well handy for mounting and must be prewired I suspect, I also asked about the BMS. Will let you know when I get a reply. I messaged them again saying 4 60V packs is the likely order so far...

Looks like my situation may be changing mid next year, and my personal EV conversion may not happen (in Australia at least). I'm going to have to stop collecting EV parts (including these batteries) until I know what's going to happen. Sorry about that.

It's so hard to let a deal like that go! They're so modular and good for DIY conversion!

Possibly. Graduate in July, got a phone interview with a US company next week, and visiting their HQ in January (because I'll be in town). Will see how it goes.

They have arrived and Batrium have made a special board for the BMS to match. Handy that the cases came with them, looking forward to finishing the suzuki carry (bongo van) now.

just to give you an idea on how good these cells are,

I just finished converting a vectrix with 18 leaf modules
on a full power acceleration, the voltage fell from 144v resting to 139v @ 230A

same with A123 20Ah cells - I had to pay $700 in port charges when I brought mine in.

there is an economy of scale when getting lots of batteries in, it's just a shame there aren't a large number of salvage leaf modules to import from the same source.

I wonder what brand new ones from AES cost...

They look like an easy shoe in package, more details on chemistry etc. would be nice, seems a good deal anyone enquired further yet? Another group buy could reduce freight charges considerably for those in need of a traction pack, I have a project on the cards for a friend who wants to convert an austin A10 ute so I could be involved for 4 modules.
Anyone else interested?

More Leaf cells from the supplier in the US might be another year and a half as Russian interests seem to be outbidding him on wrecked Leaf's lately so it will take more time to amass a stash of them for a pallet ship and prices might even go up if the wrecks get more sought after. We are also looking at getting the entire drive-train/loom sent as well...

If you want to buy from an Australian supplier then talk to Graeme at OZ DIY Electric Vehicles / Suzi Auto Services at Springwood QLD. He is doing group buys of Leaf modules for the Brisbane branch of AEVA.

Just to keep people informed who might be looking for these in the future...

I recently bought 40x leaf modules from Graeme at http://ozdiyelectricvehicles.com/ and http://suziauto.com/

They arrived last week, packed well, mounted in two blocks of 20 modules, all wrapped on a pallet. Graeme also supplied me with all the BMS gear to suit at a fair cost (Batrium).

They're going to replace the 45S 144V 130Ah CALBs in my car, in 2P20S 120Ah configuration.

here's a photo of the new modules and the old cells. The CALBs had top levelling strips but no active BMS, by the time I'd noticed they were out of balance the damage had been done (to some). They will likely be re-purposed for a 48V house system.

Nope, the leaf cells are approximately 3.7V (30Ah) nominal.
Each module has 2S2P, so 7.4V (60Ah).
with the modules connected 20S2P it will be 148V nominal (120Ah).

yes, it's handy they bring out the centre terminal for BMS purposes.

So really, talking about the individual 30Ah pouch cells, the install will be 40S4P.

It just randomly occurred to me that I never reported back.

Car has been up and driving for 6 months or so now. Electrically, all has been great.
I have a mechanical gremlin (drivetrain vibration) I haven't been able to solve just yet - and a busy uni semester and family addition has limited my time to look in to it. I suspect I may be up for a new gearbox - as such I've got my controller set ultra conservatively and haven't yet pushed the batteries! Sag is much less than with the CALBs though and the car is driving great.

Car needs a wash and detail and some terminal covers, I'll post some photos after that. Very happy with the leaf cells though. Easy to work with.
