Update - ABC News article - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-24/electric-car-tour-of-tasmania-unplugged-for-want-of-power/6569482

Quote
"We actually got all the way down here from Devonport yesterday on a single charge, which is something that was just unheard of even three or four years ago," he said.

But Brogan's tour hit a snag when he discovered he could not recharge the car in Hobart because the city's only charging station at the Museum of Old and New Art was incompatible with his vehicle's charging device.

This news will unfortunately cause many people to laugh at EVs, but it is probably a good thing in that it highlights the lack of such facilities.

(as an aside, I wasn't aware that there was a public-use charger at MONA?)

OK......

So now I have come to the conclusion that there is no power points in Tasmania.

The rhetoric about incompatible charging stations is crap. Mennekes is not the de-facto standard in Australia.

It's a bit peculiar isn't it. According to Matt Brogan on twitter, their accommodation didn't have any charging facilities, but "RACT were able to help out with a 240V connection". So they didn't leave it charging at 240V overnight?

And apparently they tried charging at MONA (tweets seemed to imply they contacted Walsh first for permission to use) but it wasn't compatible? They're both Tesla Model S's - are there variations on Tesla charging connectors?

charging a tesla overnight at 2.4kw probably won't fill it (85kwh battery)

only an issue if they wanted to drive all the way back on the one charge though I suppose

Oh no - my name has been deciphered!

Yes, that's me. One of our members shared the link to Plugshare - I hadn't come across it before. I'm not exactly on the beaten track but thought I'd add another dot to the map.

This doesn't paint an ideal picture for the Tesla: http://www.motoring.com.au/reviews/2015/prestige-and-luxury/tesla/model-s/trans-tasmanian-tesla-52366.

"From here we'd planned to utilise the Nissan LEAF charge point at DJ Motors in Hobart. We'd borrowed what we were told was the right adaptor for the charge point, but on arrival found it incompatible. We were now up the creek and our accommodation didn't have a parking space with a 240-volt outlet...". Of course the discussion forum on the page has arguments from both sides about EVs.
